Title Screen Sounds

To hear animal sounds such as sheep, elephants and sea lions, press {{A}} , {{X}} , {{Y}} or {{Z}} at the title screen.
The reason for this little easter egg is unknown, but it’s fun, especially for kids.

Control The Kids Room Bosss

Upon reaching the Boss of the Kids Room (Funky Snaky), wait for the level to begin.
Once the boss appears and the spotlight comes shines on it, press {{Left}} , {{Right}} + {{B}} + {{C}} simultaneously and then {{Right}} + {{B}} + {{C}} simultaneously in very quick succession on Controller 2.
If you were successful in entering the code, then you are now able to control the boss.

The controls for the Boss are as follows:

  • D-pad {{Left}} or {{Right}} to make the boss move left and right.
  • D-Pad {{Up}} OR {{Down}} to make the move boss closer to or farther away from the camera.
  • {{Z}} and {{C}} to make the boss move up and down.
  • {{A}} , {{B}} , {{Y}} , {{L}} and {{R}} to have the boss make noises.
  • {{X}} to make the room light turn on and off.
  • {{Start}} will cancel user control, and make the regular boss fight start again.

This code is a little awkward to get right at first, so don’t worry if you don’t get it on your first few tries.
The timing takes some time to get used to, and you may be surprised that you got it right when you finally do.

Control The Study Room Bosss

Upon reaching the Boss of the Study Room (Paper Morphy), wait for the level to begin.
Wait until the piece of paper dips itself into the ink for the first time and flies down into the middle of the stage, transforming into a Gorilla, who will proceed grunt three times.
Quickly press and hold {{Start}} on Controller 2 during the first grunt, and release it after the third grunt.
If you were successful in entering the code, then you are now able to control the boss.

The controls for the Boss are as follows:

  • D-pad {{Left}} or {{Right}} to make the boss turn left and right.
  • {{A}} and {{C}} to make the boss beat his chest.
  • {{B}} to have the boss pick Tongara up and slam him to the ground.
  • {{X}} to make the room light turn on and off.
  • {{C}} to make the boss Jump towards/on top of Tongara.

You can use this cheat to very quickly defeat this portion of the boss, as he stands completely still and takes damage.
After this form of him is beaten, control is lost over the boss by the user, and the fight returns to it’s normal state.

Le Bon Race

Hidden within the first level of the first 3 rooms of the game are special bonus games known as the ‘’Le Bon Race'’ where you can race against “Le Bon”, one of the main Toy Land friends.
Avoiding obstacles and passing the finish line before “Le Bon” will see him reward you with a Gold Key.
Losing will see him give you only a single Pocket Watch.

Prunchau Race and Giant Key

Hidden within the second level of the Clock Tower is a special one time bonus game where you can race against “Prunchau”, one of the main Toy Land friends.

Avoiding obstacles and passing the finish line before “Prunchau” will see him reward you with a giant key. This will turn the winding key on Tongara’s back from Silver to gold, and will also award the player 5 cogs of health.

In addition, 5 cogs of health will be kept even upon the players death from this point on until the player either completes the game or a game over occurs.

Hidden Support Messages

Hidden within the second level of the Clock Tower is a hidden early exit that shows one of three hidden message screens, depending on if you are playing in Training, Normal or Hard mode.

Playing on Training or Normal mode will present you with a screen featuring message from and a digitised version of an idol of the era known as Hiroko Nakayama (中山 博子), who was a presenter for the “Weekly Famitsu (ファミ通)” produced Japanese Video Game TV Show Game Catalogue II (ゲームカタログII). Playing on Hard mode will present you with a screen featuring a message from and a 2D render of Hirokazu Hamamura (浜村 弘一), who was an irregular host on the same show, and also former Weekly Famitsu chief editor. Finding any of the three hidden screen will reward you with a gold key to collect in the Boss level of Clock Tower. All three screens also contain unique dialogue from one another, so it is worth checking them all out.

For more information on Hiroko Nakayama, Hirokazu Hamamura, Game Catalogue II and these hidden support messages, please click here to go to this sites dedicated page on the subject.[1]

Note: This feature is exclusive to the NTSC-J version of the game.
In the PAL and NTSC-U version of the game there are no support messages from characters[2], and in “Fukubukuro”, these screens are simply replaced with the usual “Hidden Exit” screen featuring Ginger found earlier in the level.[3]

Hidden Good Ending Scene

Upon completing the game in hard mode, an extra scene will be added to the ending video after the cast of characters curtain call, prior to the credits.
Normal mode will not show this extra scene.

Got All 32 Playing Cards

Upon completing the game, if you have managed to collect all 32 Playing Cards hidden throughout the different rooms of the game, you are greeted with a congratulations screen and are then presented with a special cheat code.

Despite speculation on other sites, this cheat code is simply the same level select cheat written above, and not a code for a “hidden options menu”.

Training Mode Ending

Upon defeating the “Clock Tower” Boss in Training mode, the game will end abruptly, and very short version of the cast of characters curtain call video will play. Once this video ends, the game will simply return you to the title screen.

The final boss, credits and true ending are never shown in this mode.

Last Boss in Training Mode

Usually when playing in Training mode, as noted above, the game will end after the fight with King Gears in the boss stage of the Clock Tower, and as such, you never face the final boss “Garluch The Dragon”.
That said, a way to fight Garluch The Dragon in Training mode has recently been discovered!

Simply enter the “Stage Select” code above, and instead of starting the game, head to the options screen, and set the difficulty to “Training”, and head back to the title screen and start the game as usual. If all steps were followed, you’ll soon be fighting the Garluch The Dragon.

A difference to note is that it will take only 3 hit cycles to defeat him, instead of the usual 4. After this, you’ll get all of the ending cutscenes and credits as usual.

Ginger plays almost identically to Pepper apart from moving faster, having a higher jump and a faster attack sequence.
A double jump is also a feature exclusive to Ginger.
Note: In horse riding levels, the character remains as Pepper riding Barobaro.
