Photo CD Operator (セガサターンフォトＣＤオペレーター), known as “Photo CD Operating System” outside of Japan, is a special piece of Sega Saturn software allowing the user to run Photo CD[1] discs on the console.

This Disc was released only in PAL territories and Japan. Later revisions of the Saturn’s “Video CD Card” negate the need for this software by giving the Saturn native Photo CD support.

Both versions of this release just so happen to contain some exclusive CG artwork as demonstration material, a majority of which (all of which in the Japanese release) being from the Clockwork Knight series (5 images total). The PAL release contains 6 additional images from various other series such as “Daytona USA”, “Panzer Dragoon” and “Bug!”, bringing the image count to 11 images in total.

Regional Differences

As noted above, outside of Japan the title of this disc was changed from “Photo CD Operator” to “Photo CD Operating System”. As such, the title screen was also changed to reflect this change, depending on which version you’re playing.

Of course, you may want to view the original .PCD that were included on the disc… If so, you’ve come to the right place!

The files inside the archive were taken from the PAL version of the disc, giving a total of 11 .PCD files to view. From my own personal recommendation, a good application for viewing such files on Windows is “IrfanView”[3], which runs on modern machines with no issues (even x64!), and can even convert them to other, more friendly image formats.
