Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro (Lucky Bag)

Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro (クロックワークナイト ペパルーチョの福袋) is a Sega Saturn game released on 1995.12.15[1], which brings together Clockwork Knight and Clockwork Knight 2 onto one disc. Included is a free set of Clockwork Knight 3D Calendars for the year 1996. This special edition game was on sale for a limited time as stated on the box art for the game (限定発売/Gentei hatsubai).

Presumably, this limited period was the Christmas 1995/New 1996 period due to it’s Mid-December 1995 release date, the 1996 Calendars included and the name “Fukubukuro”, itself is a reference to a New Year sales custom in Japan of the same name with large discounts for bundled items[2], which matches up with the reduced price of this release over buying each game individually.

In addition to all of the above, the special edition also comes with a number of new features. On this page, we’re going to look at all of the new things you can find in this special version of the game, in addition to all of the changes and differences compared to the initial releases of both Clockwork Knight games.

Gameplay Modes

As a compilation game with extras, the different modes of the game are selected through special boxes on the main menu. They include the following:

Action Game Joukan (上巻)
Selecting this box will allow you to play Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Joukan (Clockwork Knight).
Action Game Gekan (下巻)
Selecting this box will allow you to play Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Gekan (Clockwork Knight 2).
Action Game Movie On Parade (MOVIEオンパレード)
Selecting this box will bring you to a screen where you are able view all the movies from Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Joukan and Gekan.
Action Game Boss On Parade (BOSSオンパレード)
Selecting this box will bring you to a screen where you can select either Tongara or Ginger, and then proceed to fight all the bosses of Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Joukan and Gekan, in order. It is possible to unlock some features of the game (title screens and movies), depending on how well your playthrough goes.

Gameplay Changes

The main games “Joukan” and “Gekan” are virtually the same as their original incarnations, bar presumed bug fixes and the original Clockwork Knight running on the second games refined engine. In addition, the Codec used for the videos that play throughout the game was changed from Cinepak to Truemotion.

As shown below, Title Screens for both “Joukan” and “Gekan” remain somewhat the same apart from the Copyright text at the bottom of each being removed, and a line of texy saing “Press {{B}} To Exit” being added to the top-left of each.

In addition to the above, the “Hidden Support Messages” found in the second stage of Gekan’s “Clock Tower” room have been replaced with the typical “hidden exit” screen featuring Ginger that can be found elsewhere in the same level. Why this was removed in this version is unknown, but it’s interesting to note anyway.

One other thing to note, which is an unexplained curiosity is that the “A Lullaby” ending video and even credits screens for both games are missing in Fukubukuro, showing the “She can’t wake up” video straight away instead of credits after beating “Joukan” and after beating “Gekan”, you are simply returned to the main title screen after being shown the ending video and the screen showing how many cards you collected during your play.

Play As Ginger In “Gekan”

As stated earlier on the page, you are able to fight all of the bosses from both games in the “Boss On Parade” mode of the game, as either Tongara or Ginger. Another interesting feature to note is that you can actually play as Ginger in a regular game of “Gekan”!

This feature isn’t readily accessible from the get go, and was actually just a pipedream for many years to non-Japanese audiences (Who knew about the feature since 1995), until 2012 when a cheat code was revealed that allowed players to finally play as Ginger in at least one of the main titles[3].

Ginger plays almost identically to Tongara apart from moving faster, having a higher jump and a faster attack sequence. A double jump is also a feature exclusive to Ginger. As a side note, the horse riding levels for whatever reason retain Tongara riding Barobaro during this mode. The reason for this is unclear, but perhaps it was due to time constraints.

Unlockable Title Screens

The main title screen of “Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro” actually changes based on how many different tasks you’ve completed throughout the games, including completing “Joukan” and “Gekan”, getting the rank of “Kanpeki Knight (かんぺきナイト)” in the “Boss On Parade” mode, etc. As shown below, there are 10 different Title Screens to see in total.
